Sara makes the startling realisation that the tomb also contains a rose that was excavated from the ruins of Paititi, Viktor von Leyden's expedition partner. The group is captured by the indigenous Roqueens, led by their shaman Okum, who are puzzled by the object in their village. Thanks to the help of the elders, Tad and Sara learn that the stars on the face of the rose are the location of an ancient city that has not been found, although some of its rituals have survived. Sara is curious as to if this city ever actually existed, whereas Tad believes that it did, for two reasons: the cruelty depicted in the story "The House of the Hundred Doors" by Paul Bowles, who "lived amongst these people, learned many of their customs and became a friend of their chief" (Tad), and the fact that people described it: the city where all the (absent) men lived in harmony with the women and children. After learning of a map of the city's location, the Roqueens take the duo to the city, but all is surrounded by various barriers that constantly hinder their journey.Tad and Sara make it through one of the barriers to reach a statue of the goddess Inanna, the story's namesake, who stares up at them. The pair then reach the head of a giant snake, which opens up to reveal a temple, and the pair enter. Tad locates a water pipe that has a broken seal and after closing the corresponding door behind him, he is drawn into the tunnel. He manages to escape, but Sara is caught at the opening, having climbed up a rope and into the mouth of the snake. She is then trapped in a machine that sucks her into the city.After a horrific time trapped in a machine, Sara regains consciousness and changes into a woman with the same features as Lara Croft.
